Vicente del Bosque quits Spain job after Euro 2016 exit

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has confirmed he is to step down as the national team manager after the countries disappointing performance at Euro 2016.

The 65-year old led took over La Roja back in 2008, after taking over from Luis Aragones. He led them to the Euro 2008 title, and followed up by making the Spanish into World Champions at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He won his second consecutive European Championships two years later, but was unable to retain the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, after being surprisingly knocked out of the group stages.

This year, Spain were amongst the favourites to retain their European crown once again, but failed to make the quarter finals after being defeated by Italy in the last-16.

Following their exit, del Bosque told Radio Nacional:

I have no intention to remain as coach.

No matter what the result of the Euros, I had no doubt about what my future would be.

The hunt for Spain’s next manager will now begin ahead of World Cup qualifying begins in September.
