Ranking each top six sides record goalscorer in the Premier League era

The Premier League has played host to some of world football’s finest attacking talents over the course of the past three decades, with some of the greatest goalscorers of modern times having starred in English football’s leading division.

Some stellar names have represented England’s best since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, but who are the most prolific goalscorers for each of the top six teams?

Here are the rankings of the top six sides record goalscorers in the Premier League era…

Liverpool – Robbie Fowler (128 goals)

Nicknamed ‘God’ by the adoring Liverpool faithful, Fowler would emerge from the club’s academy ranks before making a huge impression on the Premier League, bursting onto the scene as a teenager and scoring prolifically for the Merseyside club.

The Toxteth-born star’s earlier allegiances to city rivals Everton would soon be forgotten as the Scouse hero plundered goal after goal in Liverpool red, making an immediate impact by scoring on his debut against Fulham in the League Cup before scoring all five goals in the return leg just two weeks later

The teenage starlet would score 12 goals in his first 13 appearances before hitting over 30 goals in each of his first three full seasons as a first-team player, being named as the PFA Young Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 1995 and 1996.

Fowler would win the League Cup during the first of those years before helping Gerard Houllier’s side to a cup treble in 2001, later departing for Leeds having scored 171 goals in all competitions.

He would return via Manchester City under Rafael Benitez, adding a further eight league goals over two seasons to take his tally in the Premier League for Liverpool to 128 goals.

Tottenham – Harry Kane (136 goals)

Another player to emerge from the academy ranks to star in the first-team, Kane would enjoy a meteoric rise once giving his opportunity at Spurs, scoring prolifically for the north London side.

Once given regular first-team football under Mauricio Pochettino, Kane would flourish into one of the finest forwards in European football, scoring 20+ Premier League goals in four consecutive seasons and twice being named as the PFA Young Player of the Year.

Kane’s stand-out performances for Spurs would also see him named in the PFA Team of the Year in four consecutive seasons, winning the division’s Golden Boot in back-to-back campaigns in 2016 and 2017.

Recognised as ‘one of their own’ by the Tottenham support, Kane would transfer his form onto the international stage, being named as England captain in 2018 and possessing a record of 32 goals in 45 caps, including winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Injuries have hampered his progress over the past two seasons but his current Premier League record stands at 136 goals in just 201 appearances, with only one player to have scored a century of top-flight goals able to better his 0.68 goal-per-game ratio.

Chelsea – Frank Lampard (147 goals)

The greatest goalscoring midfielder in Premier League history, Lampard’s statistics remarkably match up to some of the best forwards the division has ever seen. The former England international banging in

Lampard would form part of a Chelsea side that would win back-to-back league titles under Jose Mourinho, being named as the FWA Footballer of the Year during that first campaign before adding a third title as part of a domestic double under Carlo Ancelotti in 2010.

The former England international’s incredible consistency would see him score 10+ league goals in 10 consecutive seasons between 2003/04 and 2012/13, including a career best 22-goal haul during the club’s aforementioned title triumph under Ancelotti.

Lampard’s ability to ghost into dangerous areas and finish with the composure of an elite forward made him a unique proposition at his peak, scoring 147 Premier League goals for Chelsea as part of his club record tally of 211 goals in all competitions. Lampard retired having found the net a whopping 177 times in the EPL, with his glory days at Stamford Bridge sandwiched in between spells at West Ham and Man City.

Arsenal – Thierry Henry (175 goals)

Regarded by many as the best player the Premier League has seen, Thierry Henry was a whirlwind of dazzling feet and electric pace at his glorious peak.

The flying Frenchman would fulfil several roles at once during the most successful seasons of Arsene Wenger’s reign at Arsenal, acting as both a finisher and provider of chances and appearing unstoppable when in full flight.

Rarely has a player breezed past high-level opponents with such ease, Henry winning two Premier League titles and two FA Cups during a Gunners career that saw him become the club’s greatest ever goalscorer.

One of just two players to score 20+ Premier League goals in five consecutive seasons, Henry also records the record for most assists in a single season with 20 during a stunning season in 2002/03.

The forward would register 44 goal involvements to be named as winner of both the PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, awards he would retain the following season as Arsenal completed a famed unbeaten season on their way to the title.

A record four-time winner of the Golden Boot, he would be named as FWA Footballer of the Year for a third time in 2006, leaving Arsenal with a record of 174 Premier League goals in 2007 before adding a further strike during a brief loan return four years later.

Manchester City – Sergio Aguero – (180 goals)

The highest scoring foreign player in Premier League history, Aguero would eclipse Henry’s landmark earlier this season to set yet another landmark in a memorable career in English football

No player in the Premier League era has ever scored more hat-tricks than the Argentine, whilst he also possesses the best goals-per-game ratio of any player with over 100 goals, having scored 180 goals for Manchester City in just 258 appearances.

The most dramatic of those goals would come on the final day of his debut season at the Etihad, Aguero scoring the dramatic stoppage-time winner against QPR to snatch a first Premier League title in stunning style for City.

A predatory finisher and winner of the Golden Boot in 2015, Aguero has scored 20+ Premier League goals in six separate seasons, including the past five consecutively – a feat only previously managed by Henry.

The 31-year-old could yet set another milestone as he quickly closes in on the 20-mark once more, few players having played a more influential role in City’s recent successes than the four-time title winner.

Manchester United – Wayne Rooney (183 goals)

The second highest goalscorer in Premier League history, Rooney also holds the record for most goals scored for a single club, having hit 183 goals during a glittering 13-year career at Manchester United.

Having signed from boyhood side Everton, Rooney would spend over a decade at Old Trafford, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League amongst his extensive collection of honours.

At his peak the forward was the embodiment of a street footballer, hurtling round the pitch in tireless fashion and providing moments of improvised ingenuity, scoring some of the finest goals the division has ever witnessed.

Including his tally of 25 league goals over two spells with Everton, he was one of just two players alongside Alan Shearer to reach 200 Premier League goals, whilst he also ranks third for assists in the league’s history.

Twice named as the PFA Young Player of the Year, Rooney would win the senior award following a prolific 2009/10 season in which he scored 26 Premier League goals – one of two times he scored 25+ in a single league campaign.
