Allardyce takes aim at Wayne Rooney

Sam Allardyce has continued an apparent spat between himself and Wayne Rooney, saying that the former Man Utd man ‘struggles against the very best’ teams.

The former England captain was hauled off during the Merseyside Derby in the 57th minute, the exact same minute that he was also replaced in the previous week against Manchester City. The decision clearly irked the 32-year-old who was seen making foul mouthed comments from the bench having completely ignored Allardyce on the touchline.

Rooney, who is best as a number 9 or number 10, has recently been used in a midfield role due to a number of injuries and players out of form.

However, despite saying that he struggles against he best sides, Allardyce indicated that he would continue to use Rooney in a midfield:

“I can agree with you, to a certain degree, that Wayne struggles against the very best opposition. He didn’t play very well in the first half against Manchester City but, before that, he had been outstanding and we had been a little bit short in midfield in recent weeks anyway.

“We’re still playing Tom Davies at 19 and bringing on Beni Baningime at 19-years-old and we are without [the injured] Gylfi Sigurdsson, who can play there.

“Davy Klaassen is still an anomaly to me. Will he or won’t he? If I had the opportunity to play him I would, but I haven’t because I’ve got to win.

“So, I don’t have the luxury of saying, ‘Go on, give it a go lad,’ because if we lose, it’s me who gets the stick.”

Klaassen has been an utter flop since making the £24 million move from Ajax last summer, making just five appearances in the Premier League – and only one of which came under Sam Allardyce.
