Ranking the 7 Premier League players with most European goals since start of 19/20

Diogo Jota continued his fine form with a brilliant hat-trick for Liverpool during their Champions League thrashing of Atalanta in midweek, the summer signing having now scored four goals in just three fixtures in this season’s competition.

The Portugal international’s haul makes him the joint-leading scorer in this season’s Champions League and continues his strong recent record in continental competition, the forward having impressed for Wolves in last season’s Europa League.

Following his exploits we’ve decided to look at how he ranks amongst the Premier League’s most prolific European scorers since the start of last season.

Here are the seven Premier League players with the most European goals since the start of the 2019/20 campaign:

Son Heung-Min – 6 goals (Tottenham)

Tottenham reached the knockout stages of last season’s Champions League despite a disappointing domestic campaign, progressing from a group containing eventual champions Bayern Munich before being eliminated by RB Leipzig in the last-16.

Amongst the north London side’s key performers was South Korea international Son, who scored five goals throughout the group stage including braces in both fixtures against Red Star Belgrade.

Son also found the net for Jose Mourinho’s side during their Europa League group stage opener against LASK this season, scoring his side’s third goal in a 3-0 victory to make it six goals in continental competition since the start of last season.

Mohamed Salah – 6 goals (Liverpool)

Mohamed Salah moved level with Steven Gerrard as Liverpool’s all-time leading scorer in the Champions League during the midweek win at Atalanta, the Egyptian scoring his sixth goal in Europe since the start of last season.

Salah scored four goals in six group stage fixtures last season including a crucial goal against Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, whilst he has begun the current campaign in fine form with strikes against Midtjylland and Atalanta.

The winger’s record in the Champions League now stands at 24 goals in 51 appearances, with only Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero bettering that record amongst current Premier League players.

Mason Greenwood – 6 goals (Manchester United)

Mason Greenwood enjoyed a breakout year for Manchester United last season to score 17 goals in all competitions for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, five of which came during the club’s run to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Greenwood’s performances saw him establish himself as arguably the most talented young forward in the Premier League, netting goals against the likes of Astana, AZ and Partizan.

The youngster’s performances helped the Red Devils secure a third-placed finish in the Premier League last season and Champions League qualification, the teenager becoming the youngest English player since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain nine years ago to score on his debut in the competition against RB Leipzig last week.

Gabriel Jesus – 7 goals (Manchester City)

Amongst Manchester City’s most important players during their Champions League campaign last season, Gabriel Jesus has often been trusted by Pep Guardiola on the biggest of occasions.

The Brazilian scored six goals in last season’s Champions League – a figure bettered by only Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland and Serge Gnabry – including a hat-trick in a 4-1 win at Dinamo Zagbreb.

Jesus also scored in both legs of the club’s last-16 victory over 13-time winners Real Madrid, before netting during City’s 3-0 win over Olympiakos in midweek to take his tally to seven goals since the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

Raheem Sterling – 7 goals (Manchester City)

Another of Manchester City’s attacking contingent, Raheem Sterling has scored seven goals in European competition since the start of last season – with just one Premier League player having scored more.

The highlight of that haul was a scintillating hat-trick against Atalanta in last season’s Champions League group stage, whilst he also netted in victories over Dinamo Zagreb and Real Madrid at the Etihad.

Pep Guardiola will once again be looking towards the England international for inspiration this season as he finally bids to end City’s wait for a European crown, the Spaniard yet to go beyond the quarter-finals in four seasons at the helm.

Harry Kane – 7 goals (Tottenham)

Sitting level with the two City boys on seven goals is Tottenham talisman Harry Kane, who scored each of his goals during the club’s run to the knockout stages of last season’s Champions League.

Kane has enjoyed a prolific record on the European stage for Spurs and became the fastest player in history to reach 20 Champions League goals, with no player having ever scored more goals for the north London side in continental competition.

Last season saw the England captain score braces against Red Star Belgrade and Olympiakos, the latter double ensuring Spurs’ progress to the last-16.

Yesterday 27-year-old Kane reached the latest landmark of his goal-laden career, by bagging his 200th Spurs goal in Spurs 3-1 Europa League win over Ludogorets.

Diogo Jota – 10 goals (Wolves/Liverpool)

Jota’s superb showing in midweek saw the forward move clear as the Premier League’s leading European goalscorer since the start of last season, his hat-trick against Atalanta moving the 23-year-old to 10 goals.

Somewhat remarkably, nine of Jota’s goals have come as part of hat-tricks, the Portuguese international netting consecutive trebles for Wolves against Besiktas and Espanyol in the Europa League last season.

Those exploits persuaded the Reds that the star was the perfect player to complement their attacking options and Jota has made an immediate impact on Merseyside since his summer signing.

His four goals in this season’s Champions League leave him as the joint-leading scorer in the competition, level with Erling Haaland, Alvaro Morata and Marcus Rashford.
