Last Meeting

PSG 2-1 Liverpool, Champions League, 28th November 2018

Liverpool’s last visit to the Parc des Princes ended in defeat as PSG got their revenge on the Reds.

The pair were drawn against each other in the group stage of this competition back in the 2018/19 season. Jurgen Klopp’s outfit were on the positive side of a 3-2 thriller in the first encounter, with Roberto Firmino netting the winner in second-half stoppage-time.

In Paris, Thomas Tuchel’s side wasted no time in stamping their authority on proceedings. Angel Di Maria tried his luck from range with a dipping volley that tested Alisson.

Hesitant defending from Liverpool led to their opponents gaining the advantage in the 13th minute. A poor clearance from Virgil van Dijk was gathered by Juan Bernat, who cut inside before reversing an effort past the flat-footed goalkeeper.

Shortly after the opener, the hosts were slightly fortunate not to be reduced to ten men. Marco Verratti’s tackle on Joe Gomez saw the Italian’s studs connect high up on the defender’s leg. The midfielder escaped with only a caution.

Liverpool were struggling to deal with PSG’s attacking prowess and were disassembled again before the interval. Alisson thwarted Edinson Cavani from close range, only for Neymar to tap home the rebound.

However, the visitors managed to halve the deficit with the final kick of the first period. James Milner dispatched a penalty after Di Maria had fouled Sadio Mane to give his team a lifeline.

Within minutes of the second period, Marquinhos thought he had restored the two-goal advantage. The Brazilian poked it past his fellow countryman, but a quick glance at the linesman confirmed his fears that he had strayed offside.

Liverpool weren’t able to fashion a clear-cut chance to equalise. At the other end, Marquinhos powered through the defence again to direct a header goalward but Alisson was well positioned to deny him.
