Mourinho sends a message to Pogba over World Cup performances

Jose Mourinho has sent a message to Paul Pogba, urging him to realise the reasons behind his impressive performances at this summer’s World Cup.

Pogba has been widely criticised since his £89 million World Record return to Old Trafford in 2016 for a number of tactically inept performances, causing Jose Mourinho to even drop his star man during times last season as he struggled for form.

However, the Manchester United midfielder went to this summer’s World Cup with France, only to put in some excellent displays alongside N’Golo Kante and Blaise Matuidi, capping off a fine tournament by scoring a goal in the final.

Speaking at a news conference in Los Angeles, Mourinho said he hoped his midfielder ‘understands why he was very good’:

“To win the World Cup can only be a positive thing,” Mourinho told a news conference at UCLA.

“So many players didn’t have the opportunity to win and help their team enough. For Paul it is the first World Cup he goes and to be world champion can only be fantastic.

“I hope he understands why he was very good. That’s the point about his performance level and contribution to a winning team, is to understand why he was so good especially in the second part of the competition, where he was absolutely brilliant.”

Pogba has frequently been criticised for his his flamboyant lifestyle, frequent hairstyle changes and his presence on social media. However the Frenchman seemed to take on a leadership role for Didier Deschamps side in Russia, with his performances on the pitch showing a real maturity.

While the Red Devils have travelled to the United States for their pre-season tour, Pogba is now resting after his exploits in Russia.

Mourinho also revealed that he messaged the Frenchman before the start of the World Cup, and once again afterwards:

“I did with Paul what I did with all my players.

“I sent a nice message before the World Cup and during it I did not disturb anyone. They needed to focus on the job for their national team.

“After the World Cup I sent a different message than to the other guys because he won the competition.”
