Monk warns Smith ‘Aston Villa have to get promoted.’

Garry Monk has heaped the pressure on counterpart Dean Smith ahead of the second city derby this weekend, by insisting that the Villains must get promoted.

Smith took over the reigns at Villa Park earlier this season, following the sacking of Steve Bruce and he managed to guide the club to a 3-0 win over Derby County last time out.

But, the club sit in 11th place and Monk has placed the pressure on Birmingham’s rivals by insisting that the minimum expectation is that they get promoted this season.

“Aston Villa have to get promoted, it’s as simple as that. That is the remit when you take that type of job in that type of scenario, with what has gone on at that club.’’ Monk told his pre-match press conference.

“He will be fully aware of that, he deserves time, every manager needs time but you know when you step to that mark you don’t always get time – especially with those demands.”

Birmingham sit just one place below the Villains ahead of this weekend’s derby match, and go into the game following a 3-3 draw with Hull City last time out.

Monk will be hoping his charges can upset the odds when they travel to Villa Park on Sunday for a 12pm kick off.
