Misfiring Aubameyang backs himself to turn his form around

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has backed himself to turn his form around following a difficult start to the season for the Arsenal captain.

Aubameyang has starred since moving to the Premier League from Borussia Dortmund but has endured the worst period of his Gunners’ career this term, scoring just three league goals and producing a series of ineffective performances.

The Gabon international won a share of the Premier League’s Golden Boot in 2018/19 before finishing as runner-up for the accolade last season, and after netting in the north Londoner’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Newcastle last weekend the star is confident the goals will soon return.

“From the beginning of this season I was struggling a lot but I think this is part of football,” he told Sky Sports.

“We gave a lot at the end of the season to win the FA Cup and to qualify for the Europa League because it was really important for the club.

“Sometimes you have ups and downs and you have to manage as best you can. I tried my best and until now it was not the best performance from me.

“I’m still positive. I think I can turn this around.”

Aubameyang’s poor form has coincided with Arsenal‘s worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, though the Gunners have shown signs of a mini-revival in recent weeks with four consecutive victories in all competitions.

League wins over the likes of Chelsea, Brighton and West Brom have moved Mikel Arteta’s side within just six points of the top six and, ahead of tonight’s clash with Crystal Palace at the Emirates, Aubameyang says his side are determined to keep climbing the division.

“At the moment we are playing well and we have to follow this way,” Aubameyang said. “If we win the couple of games that are coming we can turn around the situation.

“We are not so far from the top six so this is the moment to be back in the competition.”
