Man Utd to miss out on signing Brazilian – Report

Manchester United could be set to miss out of signing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred according to reports today.

The Red Devils have been interested in the Brazilian for a number of months, and it had been thought that United had leap-frogged Premier League Champions Manchester City into pole position to secure his signature.

City had attempted to land the midfielder back in the January transfer window, but Pep Guardiola is thought to have switched targets to Napoli’s Jorginho, as he aims to strengthen his already impressive midfield.

Despite City’s handing United the edge in the race to sign Fred, who is valued at around £50m, United are now concerned that he is dragging his heels over a switch to Old Trafford, according to The Metro.

French champion Paris Saint-Germain have made a late effort to sign the 25-year-old, and bosses at Old Trafford fear that the midfielder’s head could have been turned by the Brazilian contingent at the French club.

PSG boast a wealth of Brazilian stars amongst their ranks, with the likes of Neymar, Dani Alves and Thiago Silva all playing their football in the French capital.

United have also been alarmed by Fred’s comments last week in which he claimed his future would not be decided until after Brazil’s World Cup campaign:

“Now I just have to wait to get through the World Cup and see which is the best destination,” he told SporTV.

“I think I have to change a little. I have dreams of playing in major clubs in Europe. I made it clear that it’s my moment.

“As soon as I come back from the World Cup we will sit down, talk and look at the options.”

United are keen to get their business done early to avoid a bidding war, and with the Premier League transfer window closing more that two weeks ahead of those in Europe, they know they need to be swift.
