Man Utd defeat confirms Man City as champions

Manchester City are the champions of England for a fifth time after Manchester United were beaten by West Bromwich Albion at home.

City had the chance to win the league last week but were halted by their Manchester rivals who came from two goals down to win 3-2 in the Manchester derby at the Etihad.

That result meant that Pep Guardiola’s men still needed two wins to be confirmed as champions, and they secured the first of those yesterday with a 3-1 win against Tottenham at Wembley.

However, despite United stopping Manchester City from winning the title last weekend, the Red Devils ironically confirmed City’s status as champions after an inexplicable and unexpected defeat against the league’s bottom side West Brom, with Jay Rodriguez scoring the only goal of the game to maintain their slim hopes of survival.

As for United, despite knowing that the title race was all but over, it was a truly insipid performance, managing just four shots on target, with only one truly testing the Albion ‘keeper Ben Foster.

United’s focus now will be on securing second position in the league and of course qualifying for the Champions League next season, while they also have an FA Cup semi-final against Tottenham to prepare for next weekend.
