Luiz admits ‘honest’ talk with Lampard prompted Arsenal transfer for ‘a new challenge’

David Luiz has revealed an “honest” conversation with Chelsea manager Frank Lampard prompted him to seek a “new challenge” at Arsenal.

The Brazil international moved to London rivals Arsenal in an £8m deal on deadline day, bringing an end to his second spell at Stamford Bridge.

The 32-year-old has revealed a talk with new Chelsea manager Lampard convinced him his future lay away from the club, and says he is keen to use his experience to help his new side to success this season.

“I try to give what I have learned from my life. I had a fantastic opportunity to live here, many fantastic moments in my career, many titles,” Luiz said, as per the Mirror.

“I just try to make them understand that everything is possible if you work hard, if you really believe, if you are humble, keep your feet on the ground and take it step by step.

“The game against Newcastle and this one [against Burnley] shows the team now understands the moment, how to take the three points.

“And in the end, I try to give them what many players did for me in my life.

“My experience has taught me how to believe in life, how to dream, and that is what I am going to do here. I am a guy with ambition, and that is why I moved.

“I could choose a comfortable zone, get money, be cool and that is it. But I like a new challenge and new things in my life. This is what gives me oxygen and gives me motivation. One day football will finish and I will have to find other things to try and improve every day as I will miss football.

“I am trying to be honest – first with my heart, and then honest in the way to try new things.

“Everyone knows I was so happy at Chelsea and I won many trophies there. But I had a real honest conversation with Lamps, and Lamps had different ideas with his plans for the year.

“So the best way for me to respect the club was to move on, try to do a new challenge and give him the opportunity to do his job.

“I am so happy here – since the first day I have felt this welcome. This is a big club and I want to be here and see it shine – on the pitch and outside.

“This is why I left my family when I was 14 to try something new around the world. My philosophy in life is to be positive and to be a dreamer.

“But you must understand, to dream is one thing – to achieve your dream you have to work hard.

“I can dream and we can fight for something big: That is always going to be my speech to everyone. Now it is up to the team – the team is going to dream more, the team is going to prepare better and understand the game.”
