Newcastle welcomed Champions League football back to St James’ Park with a stunning performance to thrash Paris Saint-Germain 4-1.
The Ligue 1 champions arrived in the north east as one of the favourites for Champions League success, but return to France routed after after Newcastle ran riot.
Miguel Almiron opened the scoring with Newcastle’s first Champions League goal in two decades after turning in a rebound, before Dan Burn headed home a second.
The giant Geordie defender powered Bruno Guimaraes’ cross towards goal in a chaotic passage of play, with Gianluigi Donnarumma unable to keep the header out and the goal given after a VAR check.
Sean Longstaff then sent St James’ Park into pandemonium after firing an effort under Donnarumma for Newcastle’s third goal just minutes into the second half, with PSG unable to cope under the pressure.
Lucas Hernandez’s header pulled one back for PSG, but this was Newcastle’s night and Fabian Schar exchanged passes with Jacob Murphy before curling home a fourth from 25 yards.
“It’s some night. I think we knew it was going to be special with the atmosphere but for me and Burny [Dan Burn] to score on a night like tonight is pretty surreal and I am lost for words really,” Longstaff told TNT Sports.
“It is [a dream come true]. I think to be honest there are some of us that thought three years ago we were probably out of the door and it wasn’t a great place to be. I am so proud to be from Newcastle and I am over the moon.
“This is a different level. They have some of the best players in the world and we want to go against them and show how good we are.”
Few on Tyneside will forget this night in a hurry. Newcastle are top of Group F after two games and in pole position to reach the knockout rounds.
