Harry Kane has reportedly ‘reached an agreement’ to join Bayern Munich and put an end to a months-long transfer saga.
Tottenham Hotspur agreed to sell the England striker to the German club for a transfer fee worth in excess of €100 million (£86m) on Thursday after rejecting three previous bids.
However, reports quickly emerged that Kane was still considering the possibility of staying in north London for the forthcoming season.
But the 30-year-old will indeed leave his boyhood club before the Premier League campaign gets underway this Friday. The Athletic report that Kane has agreed personal terms with Bayern on a proposed four-year contract.
Additionally, German news outlet BILD report that Kane has been granted permission by Spurs to travel to Munich for a medical.
Kane’s contract expires in 2024, which would have enabled him to negotiate a pre-contract with foreign clubs ahead of a free transfer next summer.
Tottenham had hoped to tie Kane down to new terms to keep him at the club, but their efforts were ultimately futile.
The transfer is a club record sale for Spurs and will make Kane the third most expensive English footballer in history, after Declan Rice (£105m) and Jack Grealish (£100m).
Why is Harry Kane joining Bayern Munich?
Bayern have been missing the presence of a pure goalscoring number 9 since selling Robert Lewandowski to Barcelona last summer. Sadio Mané joined from Liverpool to add goals to the team, but left for Saudi Arabia after a difficult lone season in Bavaria. They made Kane their main target this summer and have finally got their man after tough negotiations with Daniel Levy.
Although Kane is potentially eschewing the opportunity to break the all-time Premier League scoring record – he is 48 goals behind current record holder Alan Shearer – he will be competing for trophies on a regular basis. They are seeking a 12th consecutive Bundesliga title this season and, with Kane on board, will be hoping to compete for the Uefa Champions League.
