Five of the Biggest Talents in The Championship

Brentford Ivan Toney is a great example of a player who has successfully made the leap from the Championship to the Premier League. The Bees striker was unstoppable last season as he helped his side gain promotion into the most lucrative league in the world.

Here is a look at who may be the biggest five talents in the Championship this season. It may not be long before we also see these players in the Premier League.

Sander Berge

Norwegian Sander Berge stuck with Sheffield United during the summer despite their relegation from the Premier League. The Blades broke their transfer record to sign the defensive midfielder in January 2020 for a fee thought to be in the region of £20 million.

Berge has previously played European football for Genk, so he is well accustomed to high-tier football. His current form may contribute to a promotion for the Blades given that they promisingly have EFL Championship betting odds of 6/1, according to the outright markets. With the Norway international on their side and the years of expertise under his belt, they surely have a good chance of making a quick return to the Premier League.

Sam Johnstone

West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020, so it’s quite clear how highly he is regarded by the Three Lions boss. The 28-year-old has featured three times for his national team.

Johnstone has already made five clean sheets this season. The Englishman produced some spectacular performances last season in the Premier League, but it was not enough to keep the Baggies up. He is proving a tough nut to crack for opponents of West Brom in the Championship.

Aleksandar Mitrovic

The last time Aleksandar Mitrovic played a full season in the Championship, he scored 26 league goals. He could be set to better that total this season as he has already netted 12 times through his opening 12 games.

Mitrovic has scored 43 times for Serbia and has proved himself in the Premier League. Fulham were very fortunate to retain his services this summer and they are going to be rewarded by the striker who looks a class above in the Championship.

Dominic Solanke

This is Dominic Solanke’s fourth season at Bournemouth. It didn’t quite work out for him at Liverpool, but he has time yet to still go on to have a great career at the highest level, especially having made a strong start for Scott Parker this season.

Solanke was capped by England in 2017. He scored 15 goals in the Championship in the 2020/21 campaign and looks set to better that tally as the Cherries push for the league title.

Sorba Thomas

Winger Sorba Thomas made the jump from non-league football to the Championship when he signed for Huddersfield Town back in January. Since then, he has not looked out of place at that level, and he has been rewarded for his performances with two caps for Wales.

Thomas was named the Championship Player of the Month in August and scored a fantastic goal for the Terriers in a 4-0 victory over Reading earlier this season. The midfielder picked up the ball from the halfway line on a run, before coolly slotting home, evidencing that the 22-year-old has a big future.

All five players should be in contention for the Championship Player of the Year this season.
