Euro 2016: Day 16 Round-Up

The Group stages were completed earlier this week, and now the knockout football has arrived. The last 16 is already down to the final 13 after today’s first three results sent three nations packing.

Switzerland 1-1 Poland

Jakob Blaszcykowski opened the scoring in the first half for the Poles, before a stunning bycycle kick from Stoke City star Xherdan Shaqiri took the game to extra time and penalties. The tie was eventually won by Poland, who won 5-4 on penalties after Arsenal new boy Granit Xhaka blazed his strike wide.

Wales 1-0 Northern Ireland

A cagey game was won by Wales after Northern Ireland’s Gareth McAuley slotted past his own keeper to end Northern Ireland’s hopes of European glory. Wales move on to the quarter finals where they will face Belgium or Hungary.

Croatia 0-1 Portugal (AET)

Croatia has been started to be thought of as dark horses for the Euro 2016 crown, after beating reigning European Champions Spain to top spot in the Group stages. However, the Croats dream is over after Ricardo Quaresma’s extra time strike sent Portugal through to the Quarter Finals after picking up their first victory of the tournament.
