EFL Championship Round-Up: GameWeek 43

Bank Holiday Monday provided action from the EFL Championship. Here is a round-up of the action and results, from the Championship.

At The Top

Brighton & Hove Albion Promoted!

Brighton & Hove Albion secured promotion to the Premier League, after a 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic. The Seagulls win, coupled with results elsewhere, ensured promotion back to the top flight after a 34 year wait. However, they will have to keep winning to ensure they go up as champions. On the other hand Wigan remain second from bottom, five points adrift of safety.

Elsewhere Newcastle United’s promotion push faltered as they lost 3-1 against Ipswich Town. While Brighton won their match, the Magpies are now seven points off the top. Newcastle will be anxious not to drop anymore points, with Reading and Huddersfield Town still having an outside chance of finishing second. As for Ipswich they secured their Championship status with this win.

Play-Off Chase

Reading tighten their grip on third with a 2-1 win over already relegated Rotherham United. The Royals sit on 79 points with just three games to play, thus one would assume they are going to endure a play-off campaign at the least. By contrast Rotherham are yet to reach 20 points this season, capping off a nightmare campaign for the Millers.

Huddersfield Town drew 1-1 with Derby County, the result which mathematically confirmed Brighton’s promotion to the Premier League. The Terriers drop to 4th while Derby sit in 9th.

Sheffield Wednesday moved up to 5th as they beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Loftus Road. The Owls now move further into play-off contention with that win, whereas QPR slip to 17th but remain untroubled for the remainder of the season.

Fulham moved up into the play-offs with a 3-1 win over Aston Villa. The Cottagers now sit 6th as they look to secure the final play-off spot. As for Villa, they complete the top-half of the league as they remain 12th.

Leeds United dropped out of the play-off place after a costly 1-0 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Gary Monk’s side now sit 7th, level on points with 6th place Fulham. Wolves now 16th with their Championship status secured for next season.

Relegation Scrap

Birmingham City slipped to a 2-0 home defeat to Burton Albion. That win for the Brewers now sees them four points clear of the drop-zone, as they sit 19th. As for Birmingham they now slip into danger, currently sitting 20th and only three points off the drop-zone. Following this result manager Gianfranco Zola resigned, only winning twice with an 8% win ratio.

Nottingham Forest did themselves no favours, losing 1-0 away to Cardiff City. Forest remain just above the relegation zone in 21st, but only a point safe from the drop-zone.

Blackburn Rovers picked up a point against Bristol City, however it is not the ideal result for Rovers. They remain in the bottom three on 44 points. City looking safer than their opponents as they sit 18th, four points above the relegation zone.

Rest Of The Action

Norwich City beat Preston North-End 3-1 at Deepdale. City now up to 8th, as Preston drop to 10th. However both clubs can consider their season over and both relax. At Oakwell Barnsley drew 1-1 with Brentford, a result that sees both sides remain in mid-table.
