Done Deal: Man Utd complete first summer signing

Manchester United have completed their first summer signing with the signing of Brazil international Fred.

The 25-year-old will move to Old Trafford in a £52 million deal, with an initial transfer fee of £43m being paid, and a further £9m in performance related add-ons.

Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his midfield this summer, especially considering the retirement of Michael Carrick, and the expected departure of Marouane Fellaini whose contract expires at the end of the month.

Fred, who has reportedly signed a five year deal at the club, will bring a different dynamic to the entire United side. A true box-to-box midfielder, who is strong in the tackle but also has an eye for a pass, and may also finally be able to help Mourinho get the best out of club record signing Paul Pogba.

A statement on the Manchester United website reads:

“Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached agreement with Shakhtar Donetsk for the transfer of Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos.

“A further announcement will be made in due course.”

Having temporarily leaving his national duties to complete his medical and finalise the paperwork, Fred now rejoins his international team-mates as they prepare for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

Fred’s arrival is likely to be closely followed by that of Portuguese youngster, Diogo Dalot, who is expected to have a medical at the club in the next 48 hours.
