Chelsea are set to step up the club’s interest in signing Harry Maguire from Manchester United after Wesley Fofana sustained a cruciate ligament injury.
Mauricio Pochettino’s plans for the new season have suffered a setback after Fofana sustained a serious knee injury during pre-season, with the defender set for an extended period on the sidelines after undergoing reconstructive surgery.
The issue is expected to keep the Frenchman out for much of the coming campaign and has led Chelsea to reassess the market for reinforcements.
Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Maguire, who is expected to leave Manchester United after falling out of favour. The England international confirmed last week that he had been stripped of the captaincy at Old Trafford and several Premier League sides are weighing up an approach.
90min are reporting that Chelsea’s recruitment team view Maguire as one of the best available options on the market and enquiries have been made.
United would prefer the permanent sale of the 30-year-old, but would consider a loan deal and Chelsea have the financial capacity to cover the defender’s wages.
West Ham and Newcastle have also been linked with Maguire, while there is understood to be interest from both Inter Milan and Juventus.
