‘He’s a fantastic manager’ – Liverpool’s Robertson leaps to defence of Steve Bruce after Newcastle appointment

Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has defended Steve Bruce, following criticism of his appointment as Newcastle manager.

Bruce was named as Rafael Benitez’s successor at St James’ Park on Wednesday, a decision which has received a widespread negative reception among the by the club’s disappointed supporters.

Robertson previously worked under the former Sunderland and Aston Villa manager whilst at Hull City, and the Scotland international has defended Bruce’s appointment, insisting that the 58-year-old is a ‘fantastic manager’.

“There has been a lot of negativity around it and I think that is really unfair for a man who has achieved what he has. I hope he gets the backing he deserves,” said Robertson, as per The Telegraph.

“A lot has been said about it, but for me he is a fantastic manager and his record speaks for itself. I know all the backroom staff going with him and I hope he and they prove a lot of people wrong.

“He was a huge reason in my going to Hull City. Before I spoke to Steve I did not want to go to Hull, to be honest. My agent will tell you that.

“I did not think I was ready after only a year in full-time football with Dundee and felt it would be better to wait, but I spoke to Steve for 15 or 20 minutes and he convinced me I was good enough for that level. For the two-and-a-half years I was with him he was different class and helped make me the player I am today.

“So personally, I am delighted for him. Newcastle is a huge club and I hope he does well – not against us, obviously – but in every other game.”
