Alan Shearer insists Harry Kane needs to impress at the World Cup

Harry Kane has been consistently one of the Premier League top scorers every year since he broke into the Tottenham senior team in 2014. This campaign was no different as he netted 30 times in the league. However former England captain Alan Shearer has now challenged him to continue that form for his country at the upcoming World Cup.

The Spurs man has scored 12 times for England in his 23 caps, but he really struggled at Euro 2016 which was his first competition for the national team. He failed to score in any of the games, with England being famously dumped out of the tournament by Iceland in the last 16.

Former England legend Alan Shearer has now challenged the Tottenham striker to make a big impact at the upcoming World Cup.

“I think it’s a huge tournament for Harry because of what happened two years ago. I’m pretty sure he won’t be asked to take corners at this World Cup, that’s for sure!

“To put himself on the global stage – he’s known all around Europe, obviously – he has to go out, perform and score goals in this tournament.

“Harry hasn’t looked at his sharpest over the last two or three weeks, perhaps because of his injury – but he had two chances at Wembley on Sunday (where Tottenham beat Leicester 5-4) and he took them both very well, as did Jamie Vardy.

“They will go into the World Cup with confidence, Harry with 41 goals for his club this season and Vardy with 23.”

England fans have seen plenty of great players not being able to re-create their club form in major international tournaments so there may be a little worry that Kane will struggle as well. The Three Lions will need the striker on top form to have any chance of winning the competition, or even getting to the latter stages.
