Abraham says Chelsea can ‘fight for the title’

Tammy Abraham is confident that Chelsea can challenge for the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea have opened the new season with back-to-back defeats under new manager Frank Lampard, beginning their Premier League campaign with a 4-0 thrashing at Manchester United before a painful penalty shoot-out defeat to Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday, with Abraham missing the decisive kick

Despite losing both of their opening games, the 21-year-old striker says Chelsea have the potential to ‘fight for the title’ under Lampard and has called on his side to get their first points of the season when they host Leicester at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

“A lot of the boys see the way he wants us to play and we tried to play like that against Liverpool,” Abraham told the Guardian.

“We showed glimpses of what we can do. We’re a threat, we’re good defensively and we can attack. We just have to build on it.

“The whole team fills me with confidence. Every training session, before every game, they always lift me. I just have to push on this season and hopefully we can be up there to fight for the title.

“We would have liked to win the final and at United but it is still early doors. There is still a long season ahead and we are still in big competitions as well. It’s about how we react now. The points on Sunday will be massive for us.”
