Wenger reveals Guardiola wanted to join Arsenal

All eyes will turn to Wembley next weekend when Arsenal meet runaway Premier League leaders Man City in the EFL Cup final.

Speaking in the build up to the first domestic final of the season, The Gunners French manager revealed that he almost signed City’s current manager, and that the former Barcelona coach was eager to move to The Emirates, when he said:

“I spoke to him a few times. He came once to my home when he was a player, because he wanted to play for Arsenal.”

Guardiola, who is Catalan born and bred, enjoyed a glittering playing career with Barca and was part of Johan Cryuff’s famous dream team at the Nou Camp, before later going on to manage his home town club.

Wenger did not reveal exactly when these discussions took place, although they were more than likely around the 2002-2003 season when Pep left the Blaugrana for short spells in Serie A with Brescia and Roma.

Many people of course will greet the Arsenal coaches comments with a laugh, as he is on record as having almost signed nearly every world-class player in Europe.
