Roma on the brink of signing Barcelona defender

Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen is in Rome where he is finalising a loan move to the Stadio Olimpico.

The Belgian has been limited to just seven La Liga appearances since his move from Arsenal in 2014 due to a number of serious injuries.

The 30-year old will move to Serie A on an initial season long loan, which will include an option to sign the defender on a permanent deal in 2017.

Roma boss, Luciano Spalletti, praised the former Arsenal captain, but stopped short of confirming a deal was being finalised.

Vermaelen is a player with experience and quality.

He can build the play from the back and has great character.
These players are used to playing important European matches. The talks are advanced even though for now I cannot say that it is done.

A move for Vermaelen could open up the opportunity for Roma defender Kostas Manolas to leave the club. Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with making a move for the Greek defender.
