Portugal win Euro 2016

Portugal are European Champions after a 1-0 victory over tournament hosts France.

A dull 0-0 encounter went the full distance, and neither side were able to break the deadlock.

However all that would change in the 18th minute of extra time, when former Swansea City striker Eder gave the underdogs the lead with a wonderful striker from all of 35 yards.

The big story of the game until that moment was three time Balon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo had to be substituted in the first half after suffering a knee injury. The Real Madrid forward was clattered by West Ham’s Dimitri Payet, and despite the Portuguese stars best efforts, he couldn’t continue.

He spent the rest of the game patrolling the touch line and cheering on his teammates, and was part of the celebrations as his team lifted their first major trophy in his countries history.

Portugal win the tournament having won just ONE game within 90 minutes, winning twice after extra time and once on penalties.
