Pochettino: 'Spurs must spend!'

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has admitted the club must spend money this summer, in order to improve on last seasons second place finish.

It has been a dull, lacklustre and frustrating summer to be a Spurs fan after not spending a single penny on transfer so far in this window, despite the season ending over two months ago.

Not only have they not spent, but their rivals for the title and top four have all splashed the cash around them. Manchester City lead the way with £206m, and are still looking to add Alexis Sanchez to their squad, while their neighbours United have spent over £140m.

Chelsea have spent £120m, Liverpool almost £50m, while their North London rivals Rome their transfer record to sign Alexandre Lacazette for £52m. Even Everton, who finished in seventh, have spent £90m as well as secured the free transfer of Wayne Rooney.

But despite not delving into the transfer market yet, Pochettino knows he must strengthen:

“How have Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and different clubs tried to improve their season? Bringing players and trying to put more pressure on their star players, their key players – and for us we need to do that too.

“Right, now [I hear] we need to win some trophies, no? That is good, the pressure. I think it’s important to understand now that we need to be clever how we manage the expectation and how we need to put pressure on our own players.

“We understand that Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, (Eric) Dier, (Toby) Alderweireld are really good players. They want to win but need to feel the pressure a little bit to improve every season. If there’s no competition in behind it’s normal to drop your motivation, it’s normal to drop everything that you do. And then it’s difficult to win.”

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Ross Barkley, but are yet to come to an agreement with either the player or the club regarding the financial package on offer.

They have already cashed in Kyle Walker to Manchester City for £50m, and have refused to do business over Eric Dier with Manchester United.
