Mourinho gives update on Lukaku and Ibrahimovic injuries

Manchester United have been handed a double injury blow after Romelu Lukaku suffered a serious injury in today’s game against Southampton, and his replacement, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has also been ruled out.

Lukaku was stretchered off the field after medical staff conducted the standard FA protocol after an unintentional clash of heads with Saints defender Wesley Hoedt.

The official protocol means that if Lukaku lost consciousness at any period during the match, he would be forced to miss six days of action, meaning he would miss games against Everton on New Years Day, as well as the FA Cup fixture against derby.

After the game, Mourinho confirmed that Lukaku would be ‘out of football for a while.’

The problem was compounded with the news that United’s back up striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, will be out for a month. Mourinho told the BBC

“The same [knee]. A massive problem. He is a 36-year-old with a bad knee.”

When asked about if United will need reinforcements in January to cover the injuries, Mourinho said:

“Zlatan one month out. I don’t know, I really don’t know, but I’m happy with the players’ attitude, with the players’ desire and I have no complaints about my players”

Manchester United’s only options up front are Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and James Wilson.
