Manchester United have been in the headlines recently after their signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal. In fact, the Red Devil’s have never hesitated to spend big money in the transfer market, so we thought this would be the perfect time to look at five of their most expensive signings ever …
PAUL POGBA £89.3m 2016
Pogba began his career at Old Trafford, but left the club in 2012 for Juventus in search of first-team football. After impressing during four trophy-laden seasons in Turin, United broke the world record transfer fee to resign him in the summer of 2016.
Despite struggling for consistency and with the pressure of being the worlds most expensive player, during his first season back at Old Trafford, the France international has started to show his best form during this campaign.
The 24-year-old boasts a unique blend of athleticism and unbelievable technical ability. United will be hopeful he can fulfil his potential and become one of the world’s best players over the next few seasons.
ROMELU LUKAKU £75m 2017
Manchester United beat off competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea to secure the signature of Belgium international Lukaku last summer for £75 million from Everton.
Although, he has had his critics during his maiden campaign at Old Trafford the 24-year-old has notched an impressive 19 goals in 35 games in all competitions. Lukaku boasts power, pace and lethal finishing ability, and if he can improve his link-up play United will have a world-class striker on their hands.
ANGEL DI MARIA £59.7m 2014
Di Maria arrived at Old Trafford from Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2014 with a reputation as one of Europes top attacking midfielders. Despite starting his United career in fine form, and being handed the clubs famous number seven jersey, his form soon nosedived and he fell out with then Red Devil’s boss Louis Van Gaal.
The Argentina international never really seemed to settle in Manchester, and was sold the following summer to PSG for £44 million, leaving United supporters with a feeling of regret that they never really got to see the best of him.
NEMANJA MATIC £40m 2017
United pulled off a major transfer coup last summer when they somehow convinced Chelsea to part ways with their influential defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic.
The Serbia international has slotted in to Jose Mourinho’s side perfectly since his move to Old Trafford. Matic brings a calmness to United’s midfield play that had previously been missing, and his ability to cover the defensive duties in the middle of the park make him the perfect foil for the more attack minded Pogba.
JUAN MATA £37.1m
Another player that United somehow managed to prise away from Stamford Bridge. Ironically, Chelsea were then managed by now Reds boss Jose Mourinho at the time.
The Spain international is adored by the Old Trafford faithful for his ability on the pitch and well, just being a generally top bloke off it.
He has mostly played in a right-wing position during his time with United, and has averaged almost a goal or assist every other game in the 130 appearances he has made for the club so far.
