Manchester United offer Saints swap deal

Manchester United are interested in signing Southampton captain Jose Fonte, and the player himself has admitted that he is flattered by the interest. Now Mourinho could be about to offer the Saints a player swap deal.

Fonte was an integral part of Portugals successful Euro 2016 squad this summer as well as being a mainstay of the Southampton defence for a number of years, leading to a number of Premier League clubs being interested in signing the 32-year old.

Everton were linked with the defender earlier in the window, although have since signed Ashley Williams from Swansea City. Arsenal have also joined the race to sign the Portuguese defender following their opening day horror show where they shipped four goals against Liverpool amid their injury crisis.

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho hopes to give his new club the advantage by offering United outcast Marcos Rojo to the Saints as a ready made replacement.

Southampton are unwilling to let Fonte leave before they have a replacement, so a swap deal may be something that interests manager Claude Puel.

Southampton were interested in signing Rojo two years ago before he eventually signed for Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon. Despite being signed originally as a centre-back by Louis van Gaal, Rojo has mainly been utilised as a left back in the absence of Luke Shaw, but has rarely impressed the United fans.
