Portuguese full-back Fabio Coentrao has joined Sporting CP on loan.
Coentrao joined Real in the 2011/12 transfer window but has only made 106 appearances in all competitions since. The most he made in one season was 33, in his first year at the club. Playing only 23 times in his last two seasons at Real without impressing, Coentrao is considered to be one of the biggest flops of this decade at Real.
The Portuguese defender signed for Los Blancos at the young age of 23 for €30 million. His career at the club was plagued by injuries, probably what caused the decline in his form and killed off his potential.
He came into prominence after an impressive two seasons at Benfica, contributing to 24 goals in between 2009 and 2011. These performances attracted various big name clubs, with Real landing the player. However, his dream move to Real Madrid didn’t turn out as the 29-year-old would have liked.
The player was always in Marcelo’s shadow during his tenure and hence didn’t get much of a chance when he was fit. This is his second loan spell while being a Real player, the first being his 15/16 loan spell at Monaco.
