Liverpool face more competition in battle to sign van Dijk

Liverpool’s hopes of signing Virgil van Dijk have been dealt a further blow with the news that Barcelona have joined the race to sign him.

Jurgen Klopp was known to be chasing this central defender throughout the summer, but ultimately was left disappointed with Southampton finally deciding not to be bullied into selling their best player.

The Saints have regularly sold their star players, especially to Liverpool, with Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Sadio Mane all moving from St Marys to Anfield in recent years. However, with Premier League clubs no longer feeling pressured into selling, they finally decided to dig their heels in and refuse van Dijk a summer move.

Liverpool have not given up hope of signing the Dutchman in either the January, or summer transfer window, but according to reports, they may have a new battle on their hands.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Barcelona have joined the race to sign defender having watched him in action while on international duty for the Netherlands last week.

Liverpool were already battling the likes of Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal for van Dijk’s signature, but the player had set his heart in joining Jurgen Klopp’s side. However, with Southampton reluctant to sell to a Premier League team, Barcelona’s interest could be an opportunity to offload the unhappy defender without strengthening any other English team.
