Kevin Strootman at the top of Manchester United’s January wish list

Manchester United are all set to continue their big summer spending spree into the January window, according to The Guardian. On top of that list is Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman. The Dutchman has recently been out for a lengthy period of time due to an ongoing knee injury, but the 24-year old is a proper ‘Louis van Gaal man’.

Strootman is highly thought of by Louis van Gaal, so-much-so that his exclusion from the Dutch World Cup squad meant a complete change in formation to the not so popular 3-5-2. Before that, The Oranje were intent on playing a 4-3-3, in which Kevin Strootman played as the defensive midfielder sitting in front of the back four.

January is always regarded as a tough window to buy in, and there were murmurs that United were going to make a late bid for Strootman in the summer but obviously he didn’t recover from his knee injury in time. AS Roma obviously don’t want to sell their man, and are less likely to agree to do so in the winter window unless a big money offer is on the table.

Roma also have the pull of Champions League football at the moment, but after looking at their extremely tough group including Bayern Munich and Manchester City, that may not be entirely a factor come January.
