Giggs reveals Pogba’s best position

Manchester United legend and current Wales boss Ryan Giggs has joined the debate about how his former club can get the best out of their record signing Paul Pogba.

Writing in his regular Sky Sports column the Red Devil’s record appearance maker said:

“One of the best games Pogba had was the Everton game [2-0 win on January 1], when he was on the left of Matic – in a similar position to the one he played at Juventus – and Ander Herrera was on the right.

“I think that position where he’s on the left of a midfield three is where he’s at his best. He’s a brilliant crosser of the ball and I don’t think he’s as effective when he’s having to do more defensive work in central areas.

“I would like to see him in a 4-3-3 with Matic sitting, Herrera to the right and Pogba to the left, with a selection of the front three thriving off more creativity behind them.”

Debate over Pogba’s position has intensified on the back of United’s dismal 2-0 defeat to top-six rivals Spurs last week at Wembley.

The France international was selected in a traditional midfield two alongside Nemanja Matic, but the 24-year-old’s lack of tactical discipline and intelligence left his back four horribly exposed to the threat of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, who gleefully punished the huge spaces left between the lines midfield and defence.

United broke the world transfer record in the summer of 2016 when they resigned the talented midfielder from Juventus.

However, after 18 months back at Old Trafford it still seems the the club’s manager Jose Mourinho is still struggling to find the best position from which to utilise Pogba’s undoubted talents.

Giggs is United’s most decorated player, and won a staggering 13 Premier League titles during his epic career at Old Trafford, so he certainly knows a thing or two about what it takes to build a side capable of challenging for supremacy in English football.
