Five of the best – Lionel Messi goals

With the footballing god that is Lionel Messi having notched his 600th career goal for Barcelona last weekend, we thought it would be the perfect time to look back at five of the greatest goals the mercurial Argentina international has scored during his illustrious career …

Barcelona v Getafe 2007

This wonderful solo effort is the goal that announced a 19-year-old Messi on the world stage. Picking up the ball deep inside his own half the little magician beats a couple of men, before running at breakneck speed and leaving opposition defenders in his wake, until he reaches the Getafe box, at which point he rounds the ‘keeper and slots home to score one of the greatest individual goals of all time.

This finish immediately began comparisons between Messi and another Argentinian football god by the name of Diego Maradona, who scored his own wonder goal for Argentina against England in the 1986 World Cup.

As the clip below shows the similarities between the two goals are astounding.

Barcelona v Athletic Bilbao 2015

This solo golazo came against Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey in 2015, a game in which Barcelona would go on to triumph 3-1.

Messi picks up the ball on the right touchline about 50 yards from goal. Surrounded by opposition defenders he seems to have nowhere to go. But wait Messi is an Alien, so he simply goes on a trademark slalloming run down the wing and into the Athletico box before unleashing a thunderous strike in at the near post. Quite simply no other player on the planet could score this type of goal.

Real Madrid v Barcelona 2011

Big players, score big goals, and this beauty came in the Champions League semi-final away to Barca’s arch rivals Real Madrid no less.

Messi lays the ball off to Sergio Busquests 45 yards from goal. The mercurial attacker immediately demands the ball back from his team-mate, and well I think at this stage we can all guess what happens next …

A Messi inspired Barca would go on to beat Manchester United 3-1 in the Champions League final just a few weeks later.

Barcelona v Bayern Munich 2016

Up next, is another world-class goal in a Champions League semi-final that would see his side go on to win the tournament again that year.

Bayern arrived at the Nou Camp under the guidance of former Barca coach Pep Guardiola, and were many peoples favourites to win Europes biggest prize.

King Leo was having none of it however, and left Jerôme Boateng with twisted blood on his way to scoring yet another superb solo effort.

Argentina v Brazil 2012

Despite his heroics for Barcelona over the years, Messi has not always been held in the same high esteem in his native Argentina as he is throughout Europe.

So the perfect way to solve this issue was obviously to go out and put in this epic solo display against his countries arch rivals Brazil.

We’re cheating a bit here, and we’re going to include all three of his goals in a truly amazing hat-trick. With each of Master Messi’s goals progressively better than the the one before it.
