After four long years, the waiting is over and the European Championships are back.

The tournament which was last jointly held in Ukraine and Poland moves to France, and in time honoured tradition, the host nation opened fixtures.

France v Romania, Group A
The hosts grabbed three valuable points in Group A as Premier League duo Olivier Giroud and Dimitri Payet scored either side of a Romanian penalty to give Les Bleus a vital 2-1 victory in the Stade de France, Paris.

Arsenal striker Giroud opened the scoring in the tournament, before Juventus defender Patrice Evra gave Romania the chance to equalise from the spot.

Bogdan Stancu slotted home to make it 1-1 before Payets stunning left foot strike sealed the points.
