EFL Championship Round-Up: GameWeek 42

The EFL Championship provided some action over the Easter weekend. Let’s just say it was nothing short of cracking! Here is a round-up of all the EFL Championship action over Easter.

Thursday Night’s Action

Nick Powell completed an incredible turnaround, as Wigan Athletic beat Barnsley 3-2. Powell came on as substitute and scored an 11 minute hat-trick, to claim a three vital points for Wigan as they hunt for survival. However despite a huge win the Latics remain 5 points adrift of safety, as they sit second from bottom. On the other hand Barnsley remain untroubled in 13th.

Friday’s Action

Easter Friday provided the heaviest set of action from the EFL Championship. Here is a round-up of Friday’s action.

Battle For The Title

Brighton & Hove Albion secured three huge points with a 2-0 away to Wolverhampton Wanderers. That win saw the Seagulls move to the top of the Championship on 89 points. Later on Newcastle United dropped two points as they drew 1-1 at home to Leeds United. A last minute equalizer from Chris Wood meant Newcastle ended the weekend four points behind leaders Brighton.

Brighton could be promoted to the Premier League on Monday if they win and results go their way.

Hunt For The Play-Offs

Sheffield Wednesday maintained their grip on the final play-off place as they defeated Cardiff City 1-0. As for Fulham they continued to mount pressure on Wednesday with an impressive 3-1 win over Norwich City. These results saw Sheffield Wednesday remain in 6th on 72 points, but only two points clear of Fulham who sit 7th.

Scrap For Survival

Bristol City took another step closer to survival with a 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers. City now up to 18th and seven points clear of the drop-zone.

Elsewhere in a huge clash at the bottom, Blackburn Rovers gained three valuable points with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest. Rovers now up to 22nd, just two points adrift of safety whereas Forest have been dragged back into the relegation scrap.

Burton Albion were dealt a hammer blow to their survival chances, with a 2-1 defeat against Ipswich Town. The Brewers now only a place above the drop-zone.

Birmingham City could only collect a point against already relegated Rotherham United, as the sides played out a 1-1 draw. While City remain four points clear of safety, Gianfranco Zola’s side shall be nervously looking over their shoulders.

Rest of Friday’s Action

Brentford thrashed Derby County in style with a 4-0 win at Griffin Park. The Bees looking strong for a top-half finish this season as they currently sit 11th. On the other hand the Rams sit 8th.

Finally towards the top Huddersfield Town were forced to scrap out a 3-2 over a resilient Preston North-End. At least one more win for the Terriers would secure a play-off place for David Wagner’s side, as they sit 3rd. Preston remain comfortable as they can watch the season end peacefully as they sit 9th.

Saturday’s Action

At Villa Park Reading seemingly all but secured a play-off place, with a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa. Joseph Mendes opened the scoring with goal for Reading with just six minutes played. However James Chester drew Villa level eight minutes later. On the 46th minute Mendes secured a brace with his second of the game to put the Royals in front. Finally Lewis Grabban secured all three points for Jaap Stam’s side from the spot with less than 11 minutes to go.

Reading now up to 4th on 76 points and look all but set for a play-off campaign. Whereas Aston Villa complete the top-half of the Championship as they sit 12th.
