DONE DEAL: Southampton sign Palace 'keeper

Southampton have completed the signing of Alex McCarthy from fellow Premier League club, Crystal Palace.

The Saints have brought the young goalkeeper to the club to challenge England goalkeeper Fraser Forster for the number one jersey following the departure of former loanee goalkeer Maarten Stekelenburg who joined Everton.

McCarthy had slipped further down the pecking order at Selhurst Park following the arrival of French international goalkeeper Steve Mandanda.

McCarthy told the Southampton website:

I’m over the moon to join a club like this. The club is known for producing young players and they’ve had successful seasons.
There’s the Europa League to look forward to this season, so there’s going to be a lot of games.
With the stature of the club, I’m honoured to be here and I’m looking forward to getting working with everyone.

He has signed a three year deal at St Marys.
