Manchester United have finally confirmed that Spanish goalkeeper, Victor Valdes, has left the club, as he joins Standard Liege of Belgium.
The Spaniard joined Manchester United little over 12 months ago, and made just 2 appearances for the club, in the wake of an injury to #1 goalkeeper, David de Gea.
Speculation was rife that de Gea had played his last game for the club amid interest from Real Madrid, but many were shocked when Victor Valdes was not taken on Manchester Uniteds pre season tour of the USA. Louis van Gaal later confirmed that Valdes was no longer part of his plans after the ‘keeper failed to follow his philosophy by questioning if he should be playing in the Under-21s.
Van Gaal subsequently signed Sergio Romero, and stripped Valdes of his squad number and his team suit.
However the move to send Valdes out, only on loan as opposed to a permanent deal, may throw some doubt on how long Louis van Gaal will be in a job at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have a pen option to add a further year into Valdes’ contract, something they may do, should Louis van Gaal no longer be around.
