DONE DEAL: Atletico Madrid complete Diego Costa transfer and confirm new squad number

Atletico Madrid have completed the signing of Diego Costa from Chelsea.

The striker has been linked with a return to the Spanish capital for a number of months ever since Chelsea boss, Antonio Conte, informed the striker via a text message that he was no longer a part of his plans at the end of last season.

A deal was unable to be struck during the summer, but the two clubs announced last week that a deal had been agreed. That deal, which is thought to be worth around €55m, has now been finalised with Diego Costa now officially an Atletico Madrid player once more.

Speaking to the club website Costa said:

“I’m very happy to return home, I’ve always said it, Atlético is my home, I’m very, very happy.

“I’m looking forward to start contributing. I’m going to give my all for the team, as I always try to do.”

Despite Costa having completed the transfer to the Wanda Metropolitano, he will be unable to make his second debut until January when the next transfer window is open, the only time club’s can officially register a transferring player.

Atletico have also confirmed that Costa will wear the number 18.

Interestingly, he could be presented to his new fans as soon as tonight as Atletico Madrid prepare for their second Champions League group game, ironically, against Chelsea.
