CONFIRMED: Reading appoint Jaap Stam as new manager

Reading have confirmed that Jaap Stam has been appointed as the new manager, replacing Brian McDermott who was sacked by the club for a second time a fortnight ago.

The former Manchester United and AC Milan defender has signed on a two-year contract, with the option for a third year.

The move to Reading is the Dutchmans first foray into football management, after working at Ajax as an assistant manager since 2013 as well as the Jong Ajax team since 2014.

The 43-year old has just received his UEFA Pro Licence and has always harboured a desire to go into coaching.

During his playing career, Stam won 3 Premier League, 1 FA Cup and 1 Champions League title as part of Manchester United’s famous treble winning side of 1999. The no nonsense defender also won several trophies a PSV, Lazio, AC Milan and Ajax.

Stam’s predecessor Brian McDermott was sacked for a second time after just 161 days in charge after guiding the club to a 17th placed finish.
