Chelsea’s five most expensive signings ever

With Chelsea having been heavily linked with a host of players during the January transfer market, we thought it would be the perfect time to look back at five of the Stamford Bridge clubs most expensive signings ever …

Alvaro Morata – £70 million – 2017

Spain international striker Morata became Chelsea most expensive signing ever when he joined from Real Madrid last summer.

Despite struggling for form as of late, the 24-year-old has shown himself to be a top-class finisher and has netted 10 goals and provided four assists in 20 Premier League appearances in his maiden campaign in England.

Fernando Torres – £50 million – 2011

Torres joined from Liverpool in a then British transfer record deal. However, the striker failed to replicate the type of deadly finishing ability he had shown at Anfield during his time at Stamford Bridge. Unfortunately for Fernando he was so bad for The Blues he even made our list for 5 of the worst January transfers deals ever.

Tiemoue Bakayoko – £40 million – 2017

Chelsea splashed out big money on the France international after he impressed in central midfield for Monaco last season, as the French club reached the semi-final of the Champions League.

Sadly, for the 23-year-old he has not really settled into life in the Premier League very well, and has been widely criticised by both fans and pundits. It’s hard to really say what exactly he brings to Antonio Conte’s side apart from running around a lot.

Antonio Rudiger – £34 million – 2017

Antonio Conte is a long-term admirer of the Germany international and had tried to sign the centre-back on several occasions before finally getting his man last summer.

After looking shaky during his first few appearances for The Blues, Rudiger has started to look a lot more composed lately and has now become a regular starter. Athletic and good on the ball the 24-year-old has made 17 Premier League appearances so far this season.

David Luiz – £34 million – 2016

Luiz originally joined Chelsea from Benfica for £21 million and was part of the Blues side that won the Champions League in 2011.

He was then sold to PSG for £50 million in 2014 before resigning for Chelsea in the summer of 2016. The Brazil international would play a key role in the centre of defence as Antonio Conte’s side won the Premier League title last season.

His form has dipped somewhat this season however, due to fitness and disciplinary issues.
