Chelsea and Man Utd dealt a blow as transfer target signs new contract

Chelsea and Manchester United have been dealt a blow with the news that Sergi Roberto has signed a new contract at Barcelona.

Both Premier League giants have been linked with making a move for the versatile defender in recent months, but he has now ended speculation surrounding his future by signing a new four-and-a-half year deal at the Nou Camp.

He initially started his career as a defensive midfielder but has excellently been converted into a right back following the departure of Dani Alves to Juventus 18 months ago, keeping the likes of Nelson Semedo out of the squad.

Before his renewal, Roberto was available for a relatively modest €40m, thanks to the release clause in his contract, something all footballers in Spain must have. However, that clause has now increased to €500m, an increase of 1,150%!

A statement on the Barcelona website reads:

“FC Barcelona and Sergi Roberto have reached an agreement on a contract renewal, which will keep the player at the Camp Nou through to 30 June 2022.

“His buyout clause has been set at €500m.”
