Mike Ashley puts Newcastle up for sale

Controversial Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has put the club up for sale.

He has been a controversial figure since buying the club back in 2007, overseeing two relegations to the Championship.

There have been many fan protests about Ashley’s ownership throughout his tenure, which finally looks to be coming to an end.

A club statement said:

“Newcastle United requires a clear direction and a path to a bright and successful future.

“To give the club the best possible opportunity of securing the positioning and investment necessary to take it to the next level, at what is an important time in its history, its present ownership has determined that it is in the best interests of Newcastle United and its fans for the club to be put up for sale.”

Amanda Staveley, who has links to many wealthy Arab investors including Man City owner Sheikh Mansour, was spotted recently at St James’ Park, prompting speculation that she was interested in buying the club.
