Arsenal playmaker Mesut Özil could be set to leave the Emirates on a free transfer next summer according to reports in Germany.
The former Real Madrid star has less than one year remaining in his current deal at Arsenal and has not held contract talks since February.
Contract negotiations between Özil and Arsenal broke down seven months ago after the Gunners offered the midfielder a contract worth £155,000-a-week. This was because of the uncertainty surrounding the future of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who didn’t announce his intention to stay at the club until the season ended in May.
However, since then, contract talks have not resumed and according to SportBild in Germany, Özil is preparing to leave the Gunners for free next summer.
Özil is free to talk to other clubs from January, as well as agree a move away before the end of his contract, which could make it an extremely expensive summer for the Gunners.
Arsenal have also allowed the contract of Alexis Sanchez to enter its final year after eventually rejecting a £60m offer from Manchester City in transfer Deadline Day at the end of last month.
